School visits

Blyth Battery offers a range of educational services, including site visits with guided tours, practical activities and handling collections. Explore military buildings, and discover how the north-east coast was defended.

We ask for a voluntary contribution of £1.00 per child. This will help towards the costs of running educational visits and maintaining Blyth Battery for future generations

What does an educational visit include

Educational visits can be tailored to suit the group and can last either a full day or a half day.

A typical visit for KS2/3 includes a guided tour of the Battery buildings and tells the story of the Battery from the moment an enemy ship appears on the horizon, to the firing of the guns and replenishing of ammunition stocks. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions throughout the guided tour.

Also included are military marching drills, target practice and handling objects from World War Two. Other World War Two activities include the 1940s room and 1940s street games. Some of these activities are weather dependant and all may vary depending upon the volunteers available on the day. A group will be split into smaller groups and circulated around two or three activities.

For KS4 visits, we work closely with the school to produce a programme specific to the needs of your students and the unit of work they are following, often stressing key skill development and cross-curricular links. Please get in touch with Blyth Battery to discuss the specific needs of your KS4 visit.

Please note that schools will have to do their own risk assessment but the battery does have a hazard list if required.
